Britain's Real Monarch was a historical documentary presented by Tony Robinson shown on Channel 4 on 3 January 2004, 20 November 2004 and again on 28 November 2009. It has also been broadcast in America and Australia. This documentary argued that the present monarch, Elizabeth II, does not have a valid claim to the English throne she has occupied since 1952. The programme based its claim on the hypothesis that Edward IV was illegitimate, born to Cecily Neville by an English archer named Blaybourne while her husband, Richard, Duke of York was elsewhere in France fighting. It is argued that any legitimate claimant to the English throne must be descended from Henry II (1154-1189) in an unbroken line of descent in which all members were born legitimately, that is, at the time of their birth their parents were married to each other. The theorized illegitimacy of Edward would bar his legitimate succession and deprive his descendants of a rightful claim. This would have the effect of making the heirs of Richard and Cecily's son, George, Duke of Clarence, the 'real' monarchs. Such a line would currently be represented by Michael Abney-Hastings, 14th Earl of Loudoun (born 1942), who emigrated to Australia in 1960, married, fathered five children, and currently lives in Jerilderie, New South Wales. Abney-Hastings is a committed Australian republican and supports the abolition of the Australian monarchy.
